The Aberdeen Donside MSP has written to Amber Rudd after hearing from his local Citizens Advice Bureau that many European born residents in the city have been seeking guidance on how to apply for UK citizenship in an attempt to secure their long term future.
The UK Government has given conflicting statements on the issue in recent months, but have not attempted to bring in law or policy to protect the residential status of European Union nationals who currently live here.
“If EU nationals suddenly find themselves having to leave our country we will have shockwaves through our services such as the NHS which relies on the Europeans working within it. These are serious issues which could have devastating consequences not just for people who don’t know if they can make long-term plans, but for our own local businesses and public sectors they contribute to.
“With organisations from the local Citizens Advice Bureau to HSBC urging the UK Government to clarify EU nationals’ status, it is high time Theresa May and Amber Rudd gave a proper answer to this question and took action on the issue.”
