The Scottish Book Trust’s week-long celebration of books takes place each November and aims to get everyone in Scotland to enjoy reading and attend events across Scotland including nine in Aberdeen.
Residents in the city are encouraged to get together with friends and neighbours in their community to discuss and share books at local libraries and community venues.
Mark McDonald MSP for Aberdeen Donside said: “"There are few greater forces in the world than the imagination, and books are a great way to unlock its power. A good book can transport the reader to all kinds of wonderful places. Book Week Scotland is a chance for families to get together and read, either on their own or sharing a story. There are so many great books out there catering for all ages and abilities. Let's get reading!"
Kirsty Blackman MP for Aberdeen North recently supported Aberdeen Charity Home Start in their Book Advent collection. Mrs Blackman said: “I’ve got two young kids at home who absolutely love reading with me and their dad, or going off with a book themselves. I love reading and it is fantastic to see young people getting really engrossed in a novel or scouring the non-fiction reads to learn.
“I’ve seen as well how important community outreach and engagement is to encourage more people to get into reading. The Home Start Book Advent has provided 24 books to 180 families in Aberdeen, and schemes like Book Bugs from the Scottish Book Trust that get more parents to sit and read with their kids have such a positive impact on early bonding and family lives. This week is a great time to get down to your local library or bookshop and find a story that’s right for you.”
Callum McCaig MP for Aberdeen South said: “As an MP I have to read a lot as part of my job day-to-day but I really appreciate being able to pick up a book and be able to enjoy it without it feeling like work. I really hope plenty of folk take some time this week to celebrate reading and head to some of the fantastic events on offer across the city.”
